A flip book or flick book animation is a book with a series of pictures that vary gradually from one page to the next, so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear to animate by simulating motion or some other change. Flip books are often illustrated books for children, but may also be geared towards adults and employ a series of photographs rather than drawings. Flip books are not always separate books, but may appear as an added feature in ordinary books or magazines, often in the page corners. Software packages and websites are also available that convert digital video files into custom-made flip books.

The first flip book appeared in 1868 when it was patented by John Barnes Linnett under the name kineograph (Latin for “moving picture”). His kineograph was the first form of animation to use a linear sequence of images – like a booklet – rather than circular drums.

An easy way to create your own flip book is to use a post it note bad. They are a good size and have the advantage over books you may make yourself of having all the pages glued together ready for you to use.
