Making games for a living is often seen as a dream job. Video games are a huge collaboration between programmers, graphic designers, game designers, artists, product managers, and producers each of which makes a very specific type of contribution to the final product. There are many components that go into making video games: art, animation, audio and user interface design. There can be script writing, creating systems of economy within the product itself, the wide variety of potential social components and more.

A Video Game Designer will generally work in a team. They design core features of video games. Specify, they innovative game and role-play mechanics, story lines, and character biographies. They will also create and maintain Game design documentation, guide and collaborate with production staff to produce games as designed. To be part of a game design team you should know concepts such as game theory, cinematic art, animation, programming mechanics, production methodologies, and have creative writing and storytelling skills so as to develop your own world.  You will also need to be someone that works well with others. Since many modern games are so large with many different facets, everyone works on small pieces. Your small piece needs to fit together with the parts created by the rest of the team. Your title within the team may be Game designer, Character designer, 3D character modeler, texture artist, environmental artist, concept artist or creative director. You could be working on level backgrounds, character scripts or character design. On animals, objects, lighting, background, animated water or wind features, plants, sky, cars and trucks. The list of items could go on. It would all depend on the game being developed.

In addition to your own jobs in the development of the game, you typically will be helping others in the development team by play testing pieces newly completed. Every second of game play must be tested multiple times in every possible way to try to ensure their are no bugs.

Other important aspects a Game Designer needs to consider are marketing, commercial competitiveness and economic feasibility.

If you genuinely want to get into the Game Design industry, you need to be passionate about it. If you are then you will find a way that works best for you. You need to get to know people in the industry, attend conferences, write to people, improve your portfolio. The more you can show off of your particular skills the better.
